The Jedediah Chronicles: Two Stories Concerning the Life and Legacy of Jedediah P. Carpenter
by John Erwin
"The Jedediah Chronicles" presents two stories concerning the life and legacy of Jedediah P. Carpenter in a single volume: "Into the Snow: The Testimony and Last Will of Jedediah P. Carpenter" and "Jed's Legacy."
"Into the Snow" is Book One in "The Jedediah Chronicles." In the summer of 1858, Jedediah P. Carpenter finds himself orphaned at the age of 16 on the plains of Nebraska Territory. Faced with a choice between making his way west to Oregon to join his uncle and aunt, or heading southwest to Pikes Peak country to try his hand at gold prospecting, his fate is sealed by forces beyond his control. Join Jed as he pursues a life of his own making in the American west with the help of generous mountain men and plains Indians, an itinerant Methodist preacher, and the alluring Emma Cooper.
"Jed's Legacy," a sequel to "Into the Snow: The Testimony and Last Will of Jedediah P. Carpenter," is Book 2 in "The Jedediah Chronicles" series. Loretta and Sam Wilson are reeling from their seventeen-year-old son's enlistment in the army in the first months of the U.S. involvement in World War I. Partly to divert themselves from their worries about Davy, and partly out of concern for their friend's welfare, Lo' and Sam set out to find Jedediah P. Carpenter. Jed has not been seen since the autumn of 1916 -- the spring of 1917 is almost over and Jed has not emerged from his cabin in the ghost town of Buckskin Joe. A discovery in Jed's snow-bound cabin leads Lo' and Sam on a months-long adventure that takes them to some of Colorado's highest mountains, out onto the vast eastern plains of Colorado, and home again.
