“The Edge: Walking The Ulster Way With My Angels & Demons” by Dermot Breen, is a unique and very personal account of one man’s journey around one of the longest and most stunning way-marked trails in Britain and Ireland.

When Dermot lost Jacqui, his wife and soul mate of 35 years to ovarian cancer in 2015, he was totally devastated. However, in the wake of her death, and seeking some purpose to his own life, he resolved to undertake a 1,000km pilgrimage round the Ulster Way in her memory and to raise funds for cancer research. What followed was a physically and emotionally challenging journey, as Dermot struggled to overcome episodes of injury, exhaustion, anguish and grief; often made possible only through the incredible kindness and support shown by friends and strangers alike.

This is an inspirational and searingly honest account of his "unlikely" pilgrimage. Told in his own unique style, mixing traditional narrative with flights of imagination, and tales past and present, join Dermot as he treks through isolated wilderness and stunning landscapes alike, with his dark demons and guiding angels never far from his side.

I cried, I laughed, I put the book down for a breath and I walked around with it. I can't wait until the next book ... this man is a wonderful writer.

Honest, heart-breaking and uplifting. This book packs an emotional punch.

A gripping read comprising of simple language and complex feelings.

Inspirational yet written with a true sense of humility. Almost thinking of dusting down the old walking boots myself!

I have really enjoyed reading this book which comes from the heart like never before.

An emotional page turner………bringing me to tears and then bursting in laughter.

An in-depth insight into the beautiful countryside of the Ulster Way. This is a fantastic read and I would definitely recommend reading it.

Dermot's honesty provides readers with a true sense of the depths of his grief and how difficult it must be to go through the loss of a soul-mate, something that many will be able to strongly relate to. Dermot's travel logs include plenty of humour and light-hearted moments!

The writing is open, honest and is supplemented with poems and streams of conversation which Dermot has with his angel, Jacqui. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone, be it someone who has lost a loved one, or simply someone who is interested in travel, walking or Ireland!
