H.M.S. Surprise

Surgeon Stephen Maturin gets old ship Surprise for friend Jack Aubrey to captain. Jack learns Stephen is being badly tortured. Stephen also is accidentally abandoned on rocks covered with boobies, sea birds. Jack writes constantly to fiancée Sophie. In India, Stephen proposes to Diana Villiers and is challenged to a duel by her married American protector.
