Albuquerque, Colorado
by Dean Cornwall
“I want to know what your lips feel like on mine. I want to know what they taste like. I want you to smile at me.”
For the two years since he left high-school, Eric Gray has been working in the Scrubton Diner, casting aside any chance of something better so that he can support himself and his sick mom. Between mopping down tables, serving customers and keeping a watchful eye on the schoolkids who come in to play the arcade machine, he makes just enough to keep them both comfortably housed and fed.
But there’s a side perk to working in the only food joint in a town on the edge of literally nowhere: Albuquerque Robbins. Each day, for an hour at lunchtime, the gorgeous mine worker sits at the counter with his crossword, nursing a mug of black coffee and looking like a literal dream come true. Albuquerque Robbins, who once saved a kid from drowning, who all the guys wanted to be and all the girls wanted to be with, who used to play quarterback on the football team.
And who Eric has been in love with since he first knew what love was.
Author’s Note: This 80s set, sweet M/M romance brings together two of the cutest characters you can imagine. Sprinkle on a little self-doubt, a little angst and a lot of love, and you have a quick, delicious short story that will leave you feeling full of the joys of life.
